Richard Smith

Dr. Richard Smith, Chief Executive Officer
Richard Smith is Chief Executive of UnitedHealth Europe, and visiting professor at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. Until July 2004, Dr. Smith was the Editor of the BMJ (British Medical Journal) and chief executive of the BMJ Publishing Group. Working for the BMJ for 25 years, he was the editor and chief executive for 13 of those years. During those 13 years the BMJ reached out to another million readers a month through its web version and the group quadrupled in size and increased its profits some eightfold. Having qualified in medicine in Edinburgh, where he also gained a first class degree in experimental pathology, he worked in hospitals in Scotland and New Zealand before joining the BMJ. He also worked for six years as a television doctor with the BBC and TV-AM and has a degree in management science from the Stanford Business School. Dr. Smith is a member of the board of the Public Library of Science, a non-profit organisation of scientists and physicians committed to making the world's scientific and medical literature a freely available public resource. In addition, he is a member of the governing council of St George's Hospital Medical School.
